Identification of Long-lived Charged Particles using Time-Of-Flight Systems at the Upgraded LHC detectors
We study the impact of picosecond precision timing detection systems on the
LHC experiments' long-lived particle search program during the HL-LHC era. We
develop algorithms that allow us to reconstruct the mass of such charged
particles and perform particle identification using the time-of-flight
measurement. We investigate the reach for benchmark scenarios as a function of
the timing resolution, and find sensitivity improvement of up to a factor of
ten, depending on the new heavy particle mass.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure
Studies of Hadronization Mechanisms using Pion Electroproduction in Deep Inelastic Scattering from Nuclei
Atomic nuclei can be used as spatial analyzers of the hadronization process
in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The study of this process using
fully-identified final state hadrons began with the HERMES program in the late
1990s, and is now continuing at Jefferson Lab. In the measurement described
here, electrons and positive pions were measured from a 5 GeV electron beam
incident on targets of liquid deuterium, C, Fe, and Pb using CLAS in Hall B.
The broadening of the transverse momentum of positive pions has been studied in
detail as a function of multiple kinematic variables, and interpreted in terms
of the transport of the struck quark through the nuclear systems. New insights
are being obtained into the hadronization process from these studies; and
experiments of this type can be relevant for the interpretation of jet
quenching and proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC. These measurements
will be extended in the next few years with the approved JLab experiment
E12-06-117, and later at a future Electron-Ion Collider.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures; proceedings of the 19th Particles & Nuclei

FIFA World Cup and climate change: correlation is not causation
Sports analytics is defined as the process that identifies and acquires knowledge and insight about players and teams’ performances. To do so, analysts use a wide variety of data sources coming from matches and individual players’ performances (O'Donoghue & Holmes 2014; Jayal, McRobert, Oatley & O’Donoghue, 2018). Nowadays, detailed data from different nature including technical skills, individual physiological performances, team formations, or injuries are analysed on a daily basis by the analytics departments belonging to sports clubs and professional franchises. Even private companies like STATS or OPTA generate important revenues offering their movement tracking values and advanced metrics to media and fans. In the emerging field of Sports Analytics, as in many others, analysts must be aware of spurious correlations. These can come up due to the size (not nature) of data, a common-causal variable or just due to serendipity. For this reason, we always must keep in mind the lessons of the statistician Stephen John Senn and his sharp quote on the matter: “Statistics is not just about merely warning that correlation is not causation. Sometimes correlation isn’t even correlation”. Thus, we will explain an example of how climate change can be affecting, or not, on the FIFA World Cup performance statistics
C) Conclusiones.[EN] Technical-economic feasibility study for the implementation of a District Heating that
will service public buildings in the urban area of the municipality of Alhama de Murcia.
The designed Distric Heating system will contribute to the reduction of emissions of
greenhouse gases (GHG), use of renewable bioenergy to produce heat. The project is
oriented to generate employment in the locality and to reduce significantly the risk of
bushfire that comes from the sylvicultural treatments of the forest ecosystems in the
area producing forest-based biomass, taking also advantage of additional residual
agricultural biomass from pruning of agricultural tree species from the municipality. The
buildings to be connected to the District Heating system in Alhama de Murcia are:
indoor municipal swimming pool, public school Antonio Machado and Sports Pavilion
Adolfo Suarez. The study is divided into three well differentiated parts:
A) Technical feasibility study. An energetic study of the thermal demands of the
objective buildings of study and a study on the biomass availability of the locality or
location will be made.
B) Economic feasibility study, it will be possible to approach the recovery of the
economic investment only taking into account the economic criteria based on the
saving in the supply of fossil fuels and the reduction of costs in the maintenance and
operation.
C) Conclusions and considerations.
